The Dee estuary contains cockle beds, which licensed cocklers can harvest during certain times of the year. As the tide ebbs, they go out in their fast, powerful ribs so they reach the beds as low tide approaches. After hours of hard physical work, as the tide returns, they speed home with the fruits of their labours, which will eventually find their way to distant places such as Spain.
