I spent some years working on a book of photographs celebrating the people of Merseyside. Nothing was 'set up' or posed - I wanted everything I found to be authentic. I happened upon this couple outside a cafe in New Brighton, overlooking  the Mersey Estuary, and loved the total contrast between how mother and son were enjoying their time - together yet apart.
